Blog Post #10 Anthers and Stigmas and Styles, Oh My!

Anther

At the tip of a flowers filament is a anther, an anther is the part of the stamen where pollen is produced.

Stigma

Stigma is the part of the pistil where pollen germinates.

Ovule

This is the part that has the embryo sac and hence the female germ well, which after fertilization turns  into a seed.

Angiosperms are also called flowering plants. They bear their seeds with a layer of tissue that protects them. Angiosperms could also be grasses, trees and shrubs, and all wildflowers and species of flowers. They are members of the phylum Anthophyta. They have unique reproductive organs that are also known as flowers. They contain ovaries, which cover and protect all of the seeds.

This was the first picture of the flower.  This was before we stripped away any parts and dissected it under a microscope.

Joeys flower Blog post #10

The pollen lands on the sticky stigma and that is what is able to fertilize the flower and make it fertile. There are the parts: the carpel which produce female gametophytes; the anther Which is where the stage of meiosis takes place. The whole flower has a life cycle just like humans.

This is the anthers surrounding the stigma. The anthers are important because they are crucial to the reproduction.
This is the male reproductive anatomy which is called the stamen. This is important because the anther part of the stamen produces and releases pollen grains which have the sperm cells.
This is the female anatomy called the carpel and this is important because it's where the pollen gets stuck

I don't have a picture of the ovules but they are important because after a while they would be useful seeds.

Gattaca Essay

The movie Gattaca is about a man named Vincent who ever since he was a little boy, wanted to go up into space. But first he has to attend at Gattaca to be allowed to go into space. He had the knowledge and most of the qualifications. The only thing that was holding him back was his genes. If you looked at his genes, he just had a small heart problem and that was literally the only reason he couldn't get into space. But Vincent would do anything to get into space. So he fakes to be a guy named Jerome so that he could get into space.

Cloning is a very big part in this film. This is what Vincent is trying to do with Jerome. Vincent would take many samples of genetic information from Jerome every day to Gattaca. It was a long process but it was worth it to Vincent. Some of the genetic information Vincent would take from Jerome would be pee, hair, blood, and fingerprints.

I don't really think cloning is that cool. Two of the same people would be really weird and confusing. I think the bad things that could happen would greatly outweigh the good things out of it. The only good thing that I can come up with is that it could maybe look cool. But just say your clone robs a bank.

The police find you walking down the road and arrest you. How are you gonna explain that you didn't rob the bank but your clone did? You both look exactly the same. It would do much more bad things than good and I don't think anybody should further look into doing that were much better off without it.

Want to live a million years?

1) It took me about five tries. I think it took a long time because you notice by your mistakes the first couple times and fix them through out.
2) First I tried out all of the furry ones just because i didn't know how this gamed worked then through out i found out that the taller ones worked better.
3) Yes it would because drift affective to small populations.
4) The ones with long legs, long necks and not so much fur to run faster, to be able to reach high places and fur just enough to keep it warm enough during the winter.
5) Cold conditions: fur. warm conditions: not so much fur. new large predator on the scene: long legs. New tall food source: long necks and long legs.
6) There should less global warming and better traits.

Who wants to live a million years?

1. I actually got it on my second time. But after a couple more times, I realized that I was lucky. This showed me that all these species on earth have a very little chance of survival.

2. I chose the ones that were mostly tall because they could reach the tall berries and thrive.

3.Yes, because there are specific creatures that adapt and they have to adapt a lot. I also noticed the weather was changing a lot so they had to adapt to that.

4. The tall ones were more dominant then the small ones because eventually the small ones adapted to be taller because of how tall the trees were. The ones with fur and the ones without fur kind of depended on the weather. If it was cold, the ones with fur would thrive and the ones without fur would adapt to get fur. The opposite would happen if it was really hot.

5. Cold conditions, fur.  Hot conditions, no fur. Large predator, long legs. High food sources, long necks.

6. Different kinds of predators, more extreme weather conditions, and also make one for humans.

GATTACA essay

The movie GATTACA is about a man who's dream is to go into space but first has to attend at GATTACA. He was smart enough but the only thing stoping him was his genes. From looking at his genes you were able to tell that he had an heart problem which was the whole reason why he couldn't go into space. But to pursue his dream he impersonates and man named Jerome who was very well qualified for working at GATTACA but was never motivated enough to do so he gave Vincent a chance.

In this movies cloning has a huge part. Which is basically what Vincent is doing with Jerome. What Vincent did was have Jerome give him samples of genetic resource that would convince GATTACA that Vincent was Jerome. For example hair, finger prints, blood, and urine samples.

Sometimes I think that cloning would be cool but yet you never know what how thing can turn out. For example if someone clones you, they can mess with you by showing other people different characteristics that aren't you. Yet there can be a good out come maybe your clone can make you look good. But I'd rather not take the chances

Question 1

One of the characteristics of the Brassica Oleracea plants that seem to have the greatest difference is the wideness of the leaf for example the difference between two were that one was only eight centimeters and the other was nineteen centimeters.

Who wants to live a million years? Joey

  1. It took me many generations to win the game. It probably took so long because your not going to get anything perfectly right on the first try. This suggests that the human species will have to keep adapting to what nature throws at us.
  2. At first I chose a furry short character, a regular short character, and a regular tall character because I thought they would survive the longest. Most of the tall characters helped me survive the longest because they could do the most things.
  3. Yes because they would have to adapt a lot. I saw that the weather changed many times and other creatures would affect them.
  4. Long legs, long necks, and furr would help the best because they could run fast, reach tall plants, and stay warm when it’s cold.
  5. Cold conditions: fur. Warm conditions: shorter fur. Large predator: long legs. High food source: long necks.
  6. Make a human survival game, add more extreme conditions, and different predators.

A Matter Of Selection

Plant breeders need to take special care of their plant. Each one needs different needs and needs to be in different surroundings. Every plant is different so the plant breeders need to know that because if they put all of the different plants in the same condition, then some of the plants that are not suited to the surroundings will die.

Blog post #9

A plant breeder would have to take the best of care of their plants to get the best outcomes. Also they may have to give it things that you don't normally give plants. Also the conditions would have to be right, like in a perfect place with a lot of sun and a lot of water.

My interview with Henoch

What Henoch Learned is about how plants grow. he was amazed that there were different kinds of broccoli. what made him laugh was how such a little seed turned into a plant. What made him pause to think deeper was how mitosis is a big factor in the growth of a plant

#7

We are experimenting on broccoli. Its an edible plant that almost looks like a mini tree. You can predict its kinds of offsprings by looking at it parents. It's plants offsprings will looks a like because of its genes being passed down. The reason why all our plants look different even though they're related is because they all have different parents with somewhat different genes. So many forms of plants have created this one plant by passing down many individual organisms and traits to create one unique plant.

How Does Your Plant Grow?

What keeps our plant getting bigger is through the mitosis cycle, because what it does is make one cell into multiple cells. To send messages to the nucleus, proteins would create the enzymes for them to send out to the rest of the plant.

through these past weeks our groups  plants have grown successfully from being a little seed wrapped in a paper towel to actual broccoli. What tells us that our plant is healthy and well alive is its appearance and surroundings, how its well fed of sunlight and water.

A abiotic factor that possibly depended the survival of our plants wes maybe the sun light. Because plants are autotrophs, they need energy, which is provided from sunlight.
Our plants can me competing withe other plants bases on any similarities that they might have, for example soil.
Winners and a losers are determined by who's plants has grown bigger and healthier. And will be determined who's plant has either died out or possibly haven't grown as much.
Our plants can have an interaction with animals or more likely insects. These can effect our plants because these insects or animals can be eating our plants and effect its growth.
It could be a primary secession because the ecosystem is growing

Blog 3

This week, going back to the garden where we planted our plants. Observing it we noticed that were a couple holes in one of our plants. We believed it might have been a caterpillar.
The way our plants connect with the water cycle is the way it soaks it up from the soil.
Our plants connect with the carbon cycle from the dead organisms and waste products on the ground.
Our pants were probably able to get nitrogen and connect with its cycle because of the rain and the bacteria in the soil.

Joe Fordyce Interview Blog #8

Joe has learned that broccoli can grow larger than 2 inches and can grow several feet. He was surprised that there was a reflection that made his plant grow twice as fast. The size of his plant made him laugh. The spot of his plant with the reflection made him think a little bit deeper. He thought long and hard.

We are experimenting with broccoli. It's starting to grow the actual edible part of the plant. I could predict the plants parents were green. The things that are on the plant that will be passed with insects to move to different places. The looks of its offspring may very.

Our garden has been growing as a whole. All of our plants have been taking over the garden. The garden looks much more full of life. Photosynthesis has played a huge roll on our plants. Our plants have been growing a slower speed because we don’t get as much sunlight.
